KATSINA BORN ACADEMICIAN BECAME THE ‘ HIGHEST GRANT AWARDEE’ AT USMANU DANFODIYO UNIVERSITY SOKOTO

Dr. Mohammed Yahaya has been awarded the highest grant awardee by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Lawal Suleiman Bilbis on behalf of the Council, Senate, Staff and Students of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Nigeria at the just concluded combined convocation for the 38th , 39th , 40th and 41st held on Saturday, 20th April, 2024.
The award is in recognition of his exploits for attracting several multi-million Naira research grants into the university community.He doubles as a Reader (Associate Professor) of Medical Microbiology and an Honorary Consultant Clinical Microbiologist at Usmanu Danfodiyo University and Teaching Hospital, Nigeria respectively.
A Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African College of Physicians in Laboratory Medicine/Pathology (Medical Microbiology).
An excellent field epidemiologist with master’s in public health (Field Epidemiology) from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria in collaboration with Nigeria Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (NFELTP) and the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
He was formerly the Head of Department for both the university and teaching hospital for five years (2018-2022). He has over 17 years of experience in clinical microbiology, epidemiology, and public health.
Dr. Yahaya's research interests include infectious diseases, epidemiology, routine immunization, polio eradication, clinical microbiology, and HIV/AIDS. He has also served as a consultant to national and international organizations.
He was part of the team that established the existence of Dengue fever and West Nile Virus in Sokoto in 2016. He has also supported Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC), National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) and the African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET) in different roles, most notably as the team lead during the COVID-19 outbreak/response.
He is also actively involved in teaching and training medical students and has supervised several masters, PhDs and fellowship candidates. Dr. Yahaya has published over 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts and has presented over 40 papers at local and international conferences.
He is a member of several professional organizations, including the Nigerian Medical Association, the American Society of Microbiology, and the College of Nigerian Pathologists.
He is originally from Katsina State but now lives in Sokoto with his family.
